Huntsville Times - "Shaw Underlines Experience, Views In High Court Bid"
During his wife's campaign for state auditor in 2006, Criminal Appeals Court Judge Greg Shaw didn't expect to be involved in yet another campaign two years later.
Shaw, a Republican running for Alabama Supreme Court who is married to State Auditor Samantha "Sam" Shaw, said Saturday he joined the race because he "wants to keep a conservative voice on the Alabama Supreme Court."
The couple spoke Saturday at a breakfast of the Madison County Republican Men's Club at Trinity United Methodist Church. Sam Shaw took a few minutes to describe what her office does (it keeps track of some $1.8 billion in state property, from buildings to automobiles) before turning the podium over to her husband.
Greg Shaw urged the audience to support him. He is running for the post left vacant by the retirement of Republican Harold See. It is the only seat up for election on the nine-member court this year.
"When Justice See announced he would retire, it took everyone by surprise," he said. "I didn't like the lineup, so after a lot of thought and prayer I decided to run.
"I have a certain viewpoint for how judges ought to act," he said. Judges, he said, should apply the law to the facts and maintain separation of powers between the judicial and legislative branches.
"You take the facts, you apply the law and you end up with a result," he said. "You don't start with the result and move backwards."
Shaw noted that he has more than 20 years of professional experience.
"I want to keep a strong, experienced, conservative voice on the Alabama Supreme Court," he said.
Shaw is opposed by Lauderdale County District Judge Deborah Bell Paseur, a Democrat. Paseur announced earlier this month she would resign her judgeship as of April 1 to devote full time to her campaign for the post.
No other candidates have announced plans to run for the seat. The primary election is June 3.
